Lasting Powers of Attorney: What are they and do I need them?

Lasting Powers of Attorney, also referred to as LPAs, are tools you can create to provide someone with powers to make decisions on your behalf in the event you are unable to make the decisions yourself.

There are two types of LPAs, which are:

Property & Finances – these can be used to run your bank and savings accounts, make or sell investments, pay your bills and buy or sell your house.

Health & Welfare- these can be used to make decisions regarding the type of health care and medical treatment you receive, including life-sustaining treatment, where you live, day-to-day matters such as your diet and daily routines.

An LPA will ensure that your finances and property as well as health matters are being looked after by the people you chose and trust.

Having a valid LPA in place will provide a great assistance and peace of mind in the times of distress to yourself as well as the people, who care about you.

LPAs are personal documents and can only be created by an individual, who is at least 18 year old and has a mental capacity. We usually associate LPAs with older people. However, it is recommended to have an LPA in place regardless of your age as it will offer assurance in the event you happened to be involved in a dangerous accident or work in a high risk environment i.e. fire workers, constructions workers).
